A vivid cherry-red field is filled edge to edge with an all-over repeat of flowering vases and boteh (paisley) sprays, glowing in turquoise, indigo, orange and cream, in this finely knotted Persian Moud. A deep indigo border of palmettes and flowering vases frames the field. Moud rugs, from the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, are prized for their fine knotting and hard-wearing pile.

Moud rugs are known for their fineness and durability, hand-spun from Khorasan highland wool. The rich, natural-dyed palette only mellows with age. Worked entirely by hand over many months, every motif is drawn a little differently — the honest mark of a genuine one-of-a-kind, hand-made piece, an heirloom to be handed down for generations.

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen, and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum gently on low suction without a rotating brush, and avoid the fringes.
  • Use a rug pad underneath to cushion the pile and prevent slipping.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the natural-dyed colours.
  • Use only a specialist hand-wash rug cleaner for any deep clean.

Moud (Mud), a village in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, is renowned for its finely knotted, hard-wearing rugs. This example is worked in a classic all-over design — rows of flowering vases and boteh (paisley) motifs, glowing in polychrome across a cherry-red field, and framed by a deep indigo border of palmettes and vases.
