A finely hand-knotted Persian Nain from the desert-edge town of Nain in central Persia (Iran), woven in 100% hand-spun wool. The ivory-cream field carries a full Shah Abbasi arabesque of scrolling vines, palmettes and curled saz leaves, drawn throughout in the pale sky-blue linework that is the hallmark of Nain weaving, with red and navy used only as small accents.

A round radial medallion sits at the centre, built up in concentric rings with camel-brown outer lobes around a blue rosette core, answered by matching pendant palmettes above and below. The ivory main border carries a blue floral scroll between fine guard stripes, and the weaver's signature cartouche is woven into the lower border. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Nain sits on the edge of the central Iranian desert, and its workshops have been producing some of the most finely knotted rugs in Persia since the 1930s, when the town's wool weavers turned from cloth to carpets. What distinguishes a Nain is restraint: here an ivory-cream ground carries a full Shah Abbasi arabesque, but the vines, tendrils and leaf outlines are all drawn in a pale chalky blue rather than in strong colour, so the pattern reads as light and open even though every inch of the field is worked. A round radial medallion anchors the centre in camel and blue, echoed by pendant palmettes at either end, and the ivory main border keeps the whole composition cool and quiet. The weaver has signed the piece in a small cartouche at the lower edge.
