Only one available — one-of-a-kind.
A near-black field — warm and brownish rather than blue, closer to dark coffee than to charcoal — carrying a dense flowering vine of palmettes, rosettes, curled leaves and small boteh in brick red, teal, moss, gold and ivory. At the centre a stepped medallion in brick red climbs outward in right-angled tiers to a small ivory-framed square holding a single rosette, and the same stepped shape returns as bracket-like corner pieces. A brick-red main border of palmettes and rosettes surrounds it, separated by ivory guard bands, with cream fringe at both ends.
Hand-knotted in silk at 40/40 quality — 40 knots to the inch in each direction, some 1,600 to the square inch and roughly 800,000 knots in a rug of this size. That is exceptionally fine, and it is the reason a piece measuring only 45×73cm can carry a full medallion, spandrels, a main border and four guard stripes without any of them collapsing into mush. The silk pile shifts with the light, the ground reading flat black from one end and opening to a warm brown from the other. At this size it is a mat, a wall piece, or something for a small table or shelf rather than a floor rug.
100% silk pile, hand-knotted at 40/40 quality, with a natural fringe at both ends. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.
At 45×73cm this is small enough to be treated as a textile rather than a floor covering — hung, laid on a table, or framed — which is the kindest thing you can do for a silk this fine. The very dark ground hides everyday marks but shows lint and pale fibres readily. If it does go on the floor, use a rug pad underneath.
The medallion steps because the loom makes it step. Every knot sits on a fixed grid of warp and weft, so a weaver cannot tie a true diagonal — only a staircase of right angles that reads as a diagonal from a distance. Curved designs hide this by using enough knots per inch that the staircase disappears; this weaver has done the opposite and made the steps part of the design, squaring off the medallion and repeating the same stepped profile in the corner brackets. It is an older and more architectural way of drawing than the flowing vine that surrounds it, and the two styles sitting together in one small rug is the interesting thing here. At 40 knots to the inch in each direction there are around 1,600 knots in every square inch — close to 800,000 in a piece you could hold in two hands — which is why the vine keeps its curl at a scale where it has no business staying legible.
