Only one available — one-of-a-kind.
An ivory field carrying a continuous scrolling vine, hung with Shah Abbasi palmettes, serrated leaves and small rosettes so densely that almost no ground is left bare. At the centre sits a lobed rosette medallion in soft teal with a brick-red core, answered by four red spandrels at the corners — the standard way of telling the eye where the field begins and ends. A near-black main border of palmettes and flowering vine frames it, with a rose-red inner band and several hair-fine guard stripes between.
Hand-knotted in silk. The gauge is fine enough that the vine keeps its curve rather than breaking into steps, and the pile carries a directional sheen — seen from one end the ivory ground reads warm and creamy, from the other it cools towards pearl. Cream fringe at both ends. At 82×119cm this suits a bedside, a hallway or a spot beside a chair; the ivory ground is unforgiving of spills, so keep it away from where food and drink are handled.
100% silk pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.
The ivory ground will show a spill far more readily than a dark rug would, and the fine silk pile shades and tracks where it is walked on. Use a rug pad underneath to stop it creeping and to take the abrasion off the foundation.
Shah Abbasi is not a place but a palmette — a fan-shaped composite flower, half lotus and half peony, named for the Safavid ruler under whose court workshops the motif was standardised in the seventeenth century. What makes the design work is that the palmettes never stand alone: they are threaded onto a vine that runs unbroken across the whole field, so the pattern has no start and no finish. Follow one stem with a finger and it will carry you around the medallion and back without ever ending. The four corner spandrels are the same design cut on the diagonal, which is the weaver's way of implying the pattern continues past the border rather than stopping at it. Silk earns its place here: the vine has to hold a smooth curve, and a coarser pile would break that curve into visible steps.
