A hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi runner from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. Nine navy-outlined panels run the length of a bright cherry red field, each framing a floral medallion in orange, ivory and deep red, with small birds, blossoms and hooked devices scattered through the ground between them.

A wide navy main border carries stylised cypress trees and rosettes, framed by a running key-pattern guard stripe, and the rug is finished with a golden fringe. At 377cm long this is an exceptionally long runner, made for a full hallway rather than a section of one. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Turn the runner end for end every six months, as hallway traffic wears one end faster.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

At nearly four metres this is a runner for a whole corridor, and the design is built for that length: nine framed panels in sequence, each one a complete composition, so the rug reads as a series of scenes rather than a pattern stretched to fit. Rugs this long are comparatively rare because they demand a loom set up for them and a weaver committed to months at the same width without the drawing drifting. The palette is brighter than most Khan Muhammadi weaving — a clear cherry red rather than deep madder — and the navy panels give it the structure it needs to carry that brightness. Look into the ground between the panels and small birds appear among the blossoms. The golden fringe is an unusual finishing touch where ivory is the norm.
