A hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi rug from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. A column of five stepped diamond medallions runs down a deep red field, each holding a small rosette in coral and ivory, set into a dense ground of black-navy hooked stems and blossoms that fills every space between them.

Wide borders carry stepped cross devices and chevrons in black-navy on red, framed by fine guard stripes, with a woven red kilim end and ivory fringe. A one-of-a-kind piece.

  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

This is a rug with almost no empty ground. Five stepped diamonds run down the centre, but rather than floating them on open red the weaver has filled every surrounding space with hooked stems, blossoms and small crosses in a black so dark it reads as shadow, so the red survives only in the gaps. The effect is dense and quiet at the same time — there is a great deal to look at, but only two real colours doing the looking. One end still carries its woven red kilim finish before the fringe, the plain band of flatweave a weaver adds to lock the pile in place, which is a good sign of a rug made to be used rather than to be sold quickly.
