A deep indigo field carries this hand-knotted rug, set with a vertical chain of stepped diamond medallions in ivory and madder red — the layered medallion layout of the Yalameh tribal weavers of south Persia. The dark ground is filled corner to corner with botehs, blossoms, eight-pointed stars and small geometric charms, and a reciprocal border of ivory and red gathers the field. Where the line’s larger rugs are grand, this Medium piece is intimate — the same tribal vocabulary at a more personal scale.
It is hand-knotted in Afghanistan by master weavers working in the older Caucasian and Persian tribal traditions, with a fine, even knot count, a low clipped pile and flat-woven kilim ends. The wool is hand-spun and coloured with natural dyes, which give the indigo and madder their depth and the gentle, light-catching variation that machine-made rugs can never reproduce. Multiple ivory and red guard borders of tribal motifs frame the field and draw the whole piece together.
Densely woven and built to last for generations, this is a collector-grade piece — equally at home in a study, bedroom or seating area or as an heirloom investment. As a hand-made rug, it is genuinely one of a kind.
