A hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi rug from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. A column of stepped diamond medallions in gold and cream runs down a narrow red and navy panel, each medallion holding a small cross-form flower in orange, with the red ground between them filled by fine navy diamond lattice.

The border does most of the work here: a broad camel-gold band carrying navy hooked devices, eight-pointed stars and stylised flower heads, framed by red and navy guard stripes with an ivory fringe. A one-of-a-kind piece.

  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

Most rugs put their best drawing in the field and let the border frame it. This one inverts that: the central panel is drawn narrow, barely a third of the width, while a broad camel-gold border carrying navy hooks, eight-pointed stars and flower heads takes the rest. It is a deliberate choice and an old one — on a narrow rug it makes the piece feel wider and gives the eye somewhere to rest either side of the medallions. The gold ground is uncommon on Khan Muhammadi weaving, which usually frames itself in red or navy, and it lifts the whole rug considerably. Woven in northern Afghanistan.
