A patchwork of tribal Gabbeh motifs fills the centre of this hand-knotted Ghazni, each square its own little design — cypress trees, diamonds, checkerboards, zigzags, dotted fields and stars — in red, navy, gold, brown and grey, all set on a calm oatmeal-beige ground. It reads like a sampler of a weaver’s whole vocabulary, playful and endlessly varied, yet grounded by the plain sand-coloured field around it.
Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from hand-spun Ghazni highland wool, the pile is dense, soft underfoot and hard-wearing. Every block is drawn freehand and coloured with natural dyes, so no two squares are quite alike and the beige ground carries a gentle, living striation — the honest mark of a genuine one-of-a-kind, hand-made rug.
