A warm terracotta-red field is divided into a grid of garden panels in this hand-knotted rug, each compartment filled with flowering plants, cypress trees and blossoming vases in soft copper, gold and salmon. The overdyed, antique-washed finish gives the classic Bakhtiari garden design a mellow, sun-faded glow, and a deep floral border frames the whole. It reads as rich, warm and quietly grand.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from a blend of hand-spun wool and lustrous silk (80% wool, 20% silk), the pile is dense and soft, and the silk highlights lift the copper tracery so the panels shimmer as you move. Coloured with natural dyes and knotted entirely by hand, the gentle abrash and slight irregularities mark it as a genuine one-of-a-kind piece.

Material: 80 percent hand-spun Afghan wool and 20 percent silk. The wool is naturally rich in lanolin for softness and easy care, while the silk adds a subtle sheen and depth of colour.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
  • For silk-blend rugs, use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
  • Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.

The garden panel, or khesti, design divides the field into a grid of small compartments, each a little garden of flowering plants and cypress trees — a centuries-old Persian idea of paradise. Here it is overdyed in warm terracotta red and woven from a wool-and-silk blend, so the copper and gold flowers catch the light with a soft sheen. Natural dyes give the ground its mellow, antique depth, and every panel is knotted by hand — the fingerprint of a one-of-a-kind piece.
