A deep red field is filled with columns of panelled güls — hooked medallions and ‘ram’s-horn’ motifs worked in black, gold and blue — in this hand-knotted Afghani Sherwan, in the timeless Bokhara manner of the Turkmen Ersari weavers. Bands of latch-hook and reciprocal borders frame the field, closing with an elem (skirt) of stylised trees.
Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from fine, hand-spun highland wool, the pile is dense and finely knotted, giving sharp definition to every gül and border. Coloured with natural dyes and worked entirely by hand, the tones glow with gentle abrash and every motif is drawn a little differently — the honest mark of a genuine one-of-a-kind, hand-made piece.
