Black and Rose Fil Pai Elephant's Foot Gül, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

A near-black field carrying ten large octagonal güls in two columns — the fil pai or elephant's foot, the outsized emblem of the Turkmen main-carpet tradition. Each octagon holds a stepped star medallion in rose, salmon and cream, and a fine tracery links them so the dark ground survives mainly inside the octagons themselves. The framing is exceptionally deep: a dozen or more narrow bands of rosettes, crosses and dogtooth in rose and tan, occupying nearly as much of the rug as the field.

Hand-knotted in wool at 9/16 quality. The scale is the point — a standard Bokhara of this size carries forty or more small güls, where this one gives the whole field to ten, so the design reads bold at a distance rather than as texture. At 151×234cm this is a compact rug, suited to a study, a bedroom or in front of a fireplace. A near-black ground is the practical choice for a space that gets real use.
