The motifs on a Gabbeh are rarely planned in advance; the weaver adds them from memory as the rug grows. Here a brown field carries three different tribal marks in ivory — diamond-and-lattice borders, ladder-like comb rows, and a free scatter of dots — each a traditional symbol passed down through generations of nomadic weavers. Because the wool is hand-spun and the patterns drawn by eye, nothing repeats exactly; those small irregularities are the fingerprint of a handmade piece, the trace of a single weaver rather than a machine.
