A deep burgundy field carrying twelve Turkmen güls in two columns, each a lobed octagon outlined in black and quartered in ivory and gold around a small olive and ivory diamond. Between them stand cross-shaped minor güls with gold bar arms and ivory hooked tips, down the centre and along both edges of the field. Fine borders of small ivory, gold and olive diamonds run on all four sides, with a band of diamond lattice in black, olive and orange at each end and ivory fringe.

Hand-knotted in wool. The minor güls here are unusually bold: each has solid gold bars reaching out on four sides, so the crosses between the güls read almost as strongly as the güls themselves. At 80×128cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan, with ivory fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the close pile of a Bokhara is made for everyday floor use.

Deep burgundy is one of the most practical colours for a small floor rug: it hides everyday marks well and fades slowly. The ivory in the güls and the ivory fringe are the parts that will show dirt first at a doorway.

In most Bokhara rugs the minor güls — the small figures between the large octagons — are drawn thin and pale so that they stay in the background. On this rug they step forward. Look at any of the crosses between the güls: each has four solid gold bars reaching out from its centre, tipped with small ivory hooks, and set against the dark burgundy ground the gold carries almost as much weight as the güls themselves. The result is a field with two rhythms instead of one — the rounded octagons in their two columns, and a grid of gold crosses threading between them — so the eye moves diagonally across the rug as well as along it. Everything else is kept restrained: fine, narrow borders and a single band of lattice at each end, so nothing competes with the field.
