A camel ground sits at the warmer, paler end of the range and is less forgiving than a red or dark rug, though the field is densely enough filled with small devices that a mark has plenty to hide behind. The cream in the borders is the colour that will grey first.

This rug looks greener than it is, and the gap is worth knowing about because it is the whole trick of the design. Ask most people to describe it and sage green will come up early — the big hexagonal panels seem to be filled with it. Measured, every green and teal pixel on the surface adds up to four tenths of one per cent. The panels are not green at all; they are a paler camel than the field, and the green exists only in small scattered devices — a stepped cross here, a little tree there, a comb along an edge.

It carries far beyond its share because it is the only cool colour on a rug that is otherwise ninety-one per cent warm, and the eye weights a lone cool note heavily against a warm ground. The same principle is why a single blue flower reads across a whole meadow. The practical consequence is that this rug behaves like a warm neutral in a room — it will sit with browns, creams and terracottas without argument — while still reading as having colour in it. Look closely at one of the large panels and you will see it is camel, not green, which is usually a surprise.
