Camel Saf Multi-Niche Prayer Rug, Hand-Knotted Wool

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, finished with a generous ivory fringe at both ends. Ten niches with their lamps compressed into 187cm needs a fine knot — each arch is drawn with an outline, a lamp and a stepped edge inside roughly fifteen centimetres.

At this size the rug will most likely go somewhere with concentrated traffic — a hallway, a doorway, a bedside — or on a wall, which suits the design particularly well. The camel border ground is a third of the surface and is the exposed colour; it is pale enough to show marks and it is what people will step on, since the field is a narrow strip down the middle. Small rugs creep under foot traffic, so a pad or gripper is worth having.

A prayer rug carries one arched niche, a mihrab, which the worshipper turns towards Mecca. A rug with a row of them is a different object with its own name: a saf, made for a household or a congregation praying side by side, each person kneeling in their own niche. Museum examples run to three, five or a dozen arches, and the format has been woven across Anatolia, the Caucasus and Central Asia — there are recorded nineteenth-century safs from Bokhara itself.

This one has ten niches, each holding a hanging mosque lamp, the grounds running brick red, deep teal, cream and salmon in turn. But look at the scale before assuming it was made to pray on. The field is 27.1cm wide, which is narrower than a pair of knees, and the ten arches share 187cm of length between them. On a working saf each niche has to hold a kneeling adult. Here the format has been kept intact and reduced to roughly a fifth of working size — the arches, the lamps, the alternating grounds, all of it — and set inside borders so deep that more than half the rug's width is frame. It is the shape of a congregational rug rendered as a decorative one, which is why it works on a wall or in a hallway rather than in a mosque.
