Cream and Brown Jaldar Stepped Diamond, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted with a thick, soft handle, and a natural fringe at both ends. A heavier pile is more forgiving underfoot and warmer than a close-clipped one, and it recovers from furniture compression more readily.

The cream ground sits between the extremes: it will show marks more readily than a dark rug but considerably less than an ivory one, and the dense drawing across the field hides light soiling well. A thick pile also holds more dust, so vacuum a little more often than you would a fine rug.

Look closely at the edge of any diamond and you will find it is not a straight diagonal but a row of small teeth. That is not decoration added for its own sake — it is the knot grid made visible. Knots sit in straight rows and columns, so a diagonal line can only be built as a staircase of steps, and every weaver has to decide what to do about that. Some hide it by keeping the steps as small as the knot allows; this design does the opposite, enlarging the steps into deliberate regular serrations so the constraint becomes the ornament. On a dark-ground Jaldar the effect is subtle, but here the pale field puts the dark outline in full view and the serration becomes the most conspicuous thing on the rug. The pile is also worth noting: it is thick and soft rather than close-clipped, which is a different proposition underfoot from the fine Jaldars — warmer, heavier, and better suited to a room where people sit on the floor.
