Four crimson octagons stacked in a single column, joined by narrow ivory and tan lattice bands that open into hatched junctions at the sides. Each octagon holds a cluster medallion built from small cross-shaped flowers in ivory, peach and grey-blue, outlined in black and gathered in a diamond around a small red centre. Borders of alternating crimson and grey-blue lozenges on tan run between fine guard stripes, with a zigzag band at each end, closed by a plain crimson outer band and ivory fringe.

Hand-knotted in wool. The four points of every medallion are marked by peach flowers, while the flowers filling its sides are ivory and grey-blue, so each diamond is outlined by its warmest colour. At 78×119cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan, with ivory fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the dense pile of a Jaldar is made for everyday floor use.

Bright crimson hides everyday marks well but is a saturated colour, and will show fading from strong sunlight before the darker borders do. The plain crimson inside each octagon will show pile shading, and the ivory flowers and fringe will show dirt first at a doorway.

This rug combines two ideas that Jaldar weavers usually keep apart. The first is the net: narrow lattice bands dividing the field into compartments, here four octagons stacked in a column. The second is the cluster medallion: instead of a single drawn gül, a diamond assembled from small cross-shaped flowers. Look closely at one of the medallions. The flowers at the points of the diamond are peach; the ones filling its sides are ivory and grey-blue, each outlined in black; and a small red flower sits at the very centre. Because the medallion is made of separate pieces rather than one solid shape, it reads as lighter and more floral than a stepped gül — and setting it inside a drawn octagon gives each cluster a frame of its own, like a flower arrangement placed in a window.
