They touch point to point rather than sitting apart, so the column reads as one continuous chain and the crimson ground survives only as triangular pockets at the sides — the field has become the gaps rather than the background. The sea green is worth noting too. This weave normally works in cream, apricot and black on red; a cool colour against a warm ground separates more sharply, which is what keeps the chain legible from standing height.
