A glowing madder-red field comes alive with a shikargah — a ‘hunting ground’ — one of the most treasured designs in Oriental weaving, once reserved for the courts of Persia and Mughal India. A great tree of life unfurls its flowering branches across the ground, sheltering the creatures of the royal hunt: gazelles and deer leap between the blossoms, lions and leopards give chase, and hares and songbirds nestle among the vines. A stately border of navy and ivory palmette cartouches frames the scene.

Hand-knotted in the Ghazni highlands of Afghanistan from soft, hand-spun highland wool, the pile is dense, lustrous and built to last for generations. The palette is drawn entirely from natural dyes, so the red glows with a gentle abrash and every animal and blossom is drawn a little differently — the honest signature of a genuine one-of-a-kind, hand-made piece.
