An ivory field carrying a large radiating medallion built from concentric rings of tiny palmettes and rosettes, surrounded by dense scrolling arabesque in navy, rose, sage and wine. Pale blue-grey spandrels fill the corners, and a wide dove-grey main border of flowering vine frames the whole, backed by several narrow guard bands. Woven into the outer band at one end is a cartouche reading Esfahān, Yazdāni, flanked by a small Iranian tricolour in green, white and red.

Hand-knotted in wool at a very fine gauge, fully curvilinear throughout. The palette is soft and cool where most Isfahans run to strong red or indigo, and the drawing is correspondingly delicate — with less colour contrast to work with, the design depends on the precision of the outlines. At 208×308cm this is a large room rug, big enough for a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out. The ivory field is elegant but will show traffic more readily than a dark rug would.

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends, signed by the Yazdani workshop of Isfahan.

The ivory field will show traffic and spills more readily than a dark rug would. Take particular care of the signature cartouche at the end — it sits close to the fringe, where wear concentrates, and it is the part of the rug that cannot be replaced. A fine pile also crushes under furniture legs, so use a rug pad.

The cartouche in the outer band at one end reads Esfahān, Yazdāni — the city and the workshop — with a small woven Iranian tricolour beside it. Signing belongs to the workshop tradition, where a named master is responsible for the cartoon and answerable for the finished piece, and it is worth finding on the rug rather than taking on trust: look along the narrow band just above the fringe at one end. Note what the signature does not tell you, which is anything about the design. That is legible in the drawing itself. This is a radiating medallion, built as concentric rings of very small motifs around a centre, and it is the harder of the two classical Isfahan medallion types — a lobed medallion is drawn as a single outlined shape and filled, while a radiating one has to hold its circular geometry through perhaps a dozen rings of independent ornament, any one of which will show if it drifts.
