Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

An ivory field carrying rows of small Turkmen güls in rust and dark brown, with a slimmer stepped device set between them at every half step. Deep multi-band borders on a warm cream ground frame the field, running rosette cartouches, latch-hook repeats and fine chequered guards, and closing at both ends in a broad panel of diagonal lattice. Ivory fringe.

Hand-knotted in wool. Two-thirds of the field is open ivory ground, and the lattice is held to an unusual standard — measured, the pattern matches itself at 0.87 across the width and 0.88 down the length. At 277×378cm this is a large room rug, suited to a formal living or dining room.

  • Type: Hand-knotted pile rug
  • Material: 100% wool
  • Design: Pakistani Bokhara, Turkmen gül on a chequered lattice
  • Size: 277×378cm (9'1"×12'5") — Large
  • Colour: Ivory with rust and warm cream
  • SKU: XF 11483
  • One-of-a-kind: Yes

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, finished with an ivory fringe at both ends. Güls drawn at a repeat of under 15cm need a high knot count to keep their internal detail; on a coarser weave the interiors would close up.

Be realistic about the ground. Two-thirds of this field is open ivory, and the borders are barely darker, so there is no forgiving dark area anywhere on the rug. Everything that a red Bokhara would swallow will show here. The compensation is the density of the small drawing across the field, which breaks up marks better than a plain pale ground would — the border grounds are the more exposed part.

The field looks like a plain rectangular grid of güls. It is not. Slide the pattern over itself and measure how well it matches at each offset: move one full step sideways and the match is 0.87, one full step down and it is 0.88 — the lattice is held to a standard close to mechanical. But move only half a step sideways and the correlation goes negative, to minus 0.37. Half a step down, minus 0.32. Half a step in both directions at once, and it turns positive again at plus 0.24.

That pattern of signs describes a chequerboard. A half step in either direction alone lands you on the wrong kind of node — a gül becomes a slim stepped device, light becomes dark — and only a diagonal move returns you to like on like. So the true structure of this field is not the horizontal and vertical grid the eye first reads, but a lattice running at about 26 degrees to the horizontal with a step of 16.6cm, with the two motifs occupying alternate nodes of it. It is why the field reads as texture rather than as ranks: the strongest lines of connection in the drawing run diagonally, across the direction you walk, and the rows and columns are simply where those diagonals happen to cross.
