Ivory and Salmon All-Over Arabesque Nain, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends.

The ivory ground will show traffic and spills more readily than a dark rug would, and because the border is the same colour as the field, there is no darker frame to absorb edge wear. A fine pile also crushes under furniture legs, so use a rug pad.

Field and border are the same colour here, which leaves the guard bands carrying the entire architecture of the rug. Measure them: two narrow stripes, one salmon and one navy, perhaps a finger's width each, and they are the only thing telling the eye where the field ends and the frame begins. Cover them with a hand and the two zones run together into one continuous surface. That is a great deal of work for a few millimetres of colour, and it is why they are worked in the warmest tone on an otherwise cool rug — the salmon has to be visible at a glance from standing height, or the composition loses its structure. The field itself is an all-over arabesque with no medallion, so there is no centre to organise around and the border is doing more than usual to hold the design. Note how the same vocabulary appears in both, drawn larger in the border, which is what makes the guard bands legible as a boundary rather than as an interruption.
