A warm ivory ground is the least forgiving colour a rug can have, and there is no strong colour anywhere here to draw the eye away from a mark. This is a rug for a considered spot rather than the busiest route through a house, and a pad and regular light cleaning will do more for it than they would for a dark rug.

Measure this rug for colour and you find almost none. Across the whole surface not a single part of it reaches even moderate saturation — the strongest thing on it is a slate grey — and the median sits at about a fifth of full. There is no red, no blue you would call blue, no gold. The güls, the lattice, the borders and the ground are all built from ivory, grey, brown and a trace of something pale and cool.

Working with no colour puts the whole burden on drawing, and the drawing here is not simplified to compensate. The güls are fully articulated — stepped outlines, a small emblem at each centre, cruciform devices standing between them, a linking stem running edge to edge — and the borders carry five distinct bands. All of that has to read through differences in lightness alone. The practical consequence is a rug that behaves like a texture rather than a pattern: from standing height it is a warm ivory floor with something happening on it, and only when you are close does the full structure come up. That is a useful quality in a room that already has colour in it.
