Navy and Ivory All-Over Arabesque Nain, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

A near-black navy field covered edge to edge with a fine scrolling arabesque in cream, tan and pale blue — palmettes, curled leaves and small blossoms, with no medallion anywhere. A wide ivory main border of flowering vine frames it, and between the two run narrow salmon guard bands, the one warm note in an otherwise cool palette. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. On a dark ground the drawing is what you see and the field reads as the space between it, which is the opposite of an ivory-ground Nain where the ground dominates and the drawing sits on top. Combined with the absence of a medallion, that gives the rug no single focal point at all — unusual in fine Persian weaving, and the reason it reads as an even, quiet surface rather than a composition with a subject. At 203×256cm this is a room-sized rug for a sitting room or under a dining table, and a dark ground is the practical choice for a space that gets real use.
