Rows of Turkmen güls in cream and ivory rest on a bright cherry-red field, each octagonal medallion filled with a small stepped star and linked by rows of tiny diamonds. The clean contrast of pale medallions on a vivid red ground gives this square Bokhara a fresh, graphic feel.
A run of many narrow guard borders in cream, red and indigo — diamonds, hooked motifs and a scalloped medallion band — frames the field on all four sides, closing into banded panels of latch-hook lattice. Hand-knotted in Pakistan from fine, hand-spun highland wool, the pile is dense and closely clipped, giving crisp definition to every gül and border. Coloured with warm, natural-looking dyes and worked entirely by hand, the red ground carries a gentle abrash, and every medallion is drawn a little differently — the honest mark of a genuine one-of-a-kind, hand-made piece.
