Row upon row of quartered octagonal medallions — the Turkmen güls that give this design its name — march across a deep madder-red field, each divided into quarters of red, ivory and indigo and linked by a fine lattice of stems. Smaller star and cruciform motifs sit between them, while a stack of geometric guard borders, one set with eight-pointed stars, frames the whole, and ivory kilim fringes finish both ends.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan in the Turkmen tradition, the rug is tightly and evenly woven from hand-spun wool, its low pile dense and hard-wearing. The madder red, indigo and undyed ivory are all natural-dye tones, giving the field a deep, slightly luminous ground that synthetic dyes never achieve.

Repeating-gül rugs like this are among the most collectible of all tribal weavings, prized for the discipline of their all-over pattern. Densely knotted and built to last for generations, it works as a richly grounding centrepiece for a living or dining room and as a genuine heirloom. As a hand-made rug, it is one of a kind.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
  • Use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
  • Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.

The gül — literally flower — is the heraldic medallion of the Turkmen tribes, and for centuries each tribe carried its own version. Here the güls are set in the classic endless repeat: quartered octagons in red, ivory and indigo, ranked in tidy columns across the field so the pattern reads as calm and architectural rather than busy. Tiny secondary motifs fill the gaps, and bands of eight-pointed stars run through the borders. Woven in Afghanistan by hand from naturally dyed, hand-spun wool, the rug carries the subtle colour shifts and slightly irregular drawing of a piece made entirely by eye and hand — the fingerprint of a single weaver rather than a machine.
