100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which matters on a room rug of this size that will carry furniture as well as traffic.

A pale sand ground is less forgiving than a red or dark rug, though the field is closely enough drawn that a mark has plenty to hide behind. The amber inside the güls is the least stable colour and the one that matters most to how the rug reads — there is very little of it, and it is doing disproportionate work.

Almost everything on this rug is sand or brown. Measured across the surface, ninety-nine per cent of it sits in two colour families, and the palest ground and the darkest outline are both warm neutrals — there is no blue, no red, no green anywhere. Into that the weaver has put a small quantity of amber: roughly one per cent of the rug, and it is placed with complete discipline, appearing inside the güls and nowhere else. Not in the tree devices between them, not in the ground, not in the many bands of border.

A single per cent of anything ought to be invisible. It is not, because everything around it is neutral — on a surface with no other colour in play, the eye finds the only warm note immediately and keeps returning to it. The effect is that the güls read as lit from within while the trees between them stay quiet, and the whole dense field acquires a rhythm it would not otherwise have. Take the amber out and this becomes a handsome brown rug; leave it in, at one per cent, and it becomes a rug with a pulse.
