100% wool pile, hand-knotted, finished with an ivory fringe at both ends. The washed, low-contrast palette is characteristic of Chobi weaving and is achieved in the finishing rather than by fading, so it will not continue to lighten in the way an aged rug does.

This is a pale rug throughout and should be treated as one — there is no dark ground anywhere to hide marks, and the field is the quieter, more open half, so anything that does land there has little pattern to disappear into. The one advantage of a palette this narrow is that ordinary soiling tends to read as another tone in the same family rather than as a stain, provided it is dealt with promptly.

On most medallion rugs the field is the event and the border is the frame. This one is arranged the other way round, and it can be measured. By area the field is the larger half at 53.4% against 46.6%. But measure how much drawing each part actually carries — local contrast, which is independent of how brightly any part of the rug happens to be lit — and the borders come out at roughly double the field. The darkest accent colour follows the same pattern: it is very nearly three times as dense in the borders as it is in the field.

So the rug spends its detail on the edges and lets the middle breathe. That suits how a large rug is actually used. The centre of a piece this size spends most of its life under a table or a sofa, where fine drawing is wasted; the borders stay visible around the furniture. It also suits the palette. Every colour here sits in one narrow warm band — what reads as a deep red in the cartouches measures as a chestnut brown, matching that swatch at a distance of 2.4, and there is no true red anywhere on the rug. With so little colour contrast to work with, concentrating the drawing where it will be seen is what keeps the design legible rather than merely soft.
