Wine Red Turkmen Gül Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted to the 9/18 quality, with a natural fringe at both ends. The figures give knots per inch in each direction — across the width first, down the length second — and the higher vertical count is what allows the fine horizontal detail inside each gül.

A deep wine red ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have and hides everyday marks well. The cream in the güls and borders is the vulnerable colour and the first to grey; it is also what separates one gül from the next across a dense field.

The quality mark on this rug is 9/18, and it is worth understanding because it is not the balanced count you might assume. Nine knots to the inch across the width, eighteen to the inch down the length: the grid is twice as fine vertically as horizontally, so each individual knot is about twice as wide as it is tall. That is a rectangular grid, not a square one, and it changes what the weaver has to do.

On a grid like this a motif drawn with the same number of knots in each direction comes out stretched sideways — it would be half again as wide as intended. To make a gül look right, the weaver has to spend roughly twice as many rows on its height as columns on its width, counting in two different currencies at once and holding the conversion through every one of the fifty-two emblems on this rug. Nothing about the finished piece announces this; the güls simply look correct. That is the point. A rectangular count is the ordinary condition of a great many hand-knotted rugs, and getting the proportions right on one is a piece of work that only shows if it goes wrong.
