Only one available — one-of-a-kind.
The same Mahi construction as its ivory sibling, worked the other way round: here the rhombus lattice sits on a deep oxblood ground, each diamond holding a rosette with four sickle leaves curved around it, and the pole of medallions running down the centre is ivory and rose against the dark. Between the large medallions sit small pendant lozenges, and a wide ivory main border of palmettes and rosettes frames the whole, with fine guard stripes and a red selvedge. Cream fringe at both ends.
Hand-knotted in wool. A dark ground changes what the design does: on ivory the Mahi lattice reads as pattern laid on a pale field, while here the light elements read as pattern lifted out of the dark, and the medallions carry far more weight because they are the only bright shapes in the rug. At 80×303cm this is a runner for a corridor or a landing. A dark red ground is the practical choice for a working hallway — it hides everyday marks far better than a pale one, though it will show lint and pale fibres.
This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends, worked at a knot count fine enough to hold the Mahi lattice cleanly.
The dark ground hides everyday marks well and makes this a practical choice for a working corridor, though it shows lint and pale fibres more than it shows dirt. A runner takes concentrated wear down its centre line, so a rug pad and regular rotation matter more here than on a rug that can be moved around a room.
Mahi means fish, and the fish are the four sickle-shaped leaves curving around each rosette inside its diamond — they are what separates Mahi from a plain Herati lattice, and the first detail to disappear when a rug is woven too coarsely. Set that aside and look instead at what the dark ground does to the design. The Mahi lattice is drawn in exactly the same way whether the field is ivory or oxblood, but the reading reverses: on a pale ground the pattern sits on top of the field, while on a dark one the pale elements appear to be lifted out of it, as though light were coming through from behind. That is why the pole medallions dominate here in a way they do not on an ivory version — they are the only large bright shapes in the whole rug, and the eye goes to them before it registers the lattice at all. Weavers choose the ground colour knowing this; it is a decision about hierarchy, not just about colour.
