A full Mahi field: a fine rhombus lattice covering the ground edge to edge, a rosette centred in every diamond, and four sickle-shaped leaves curving around each one. Laid over it runs a pole of lozenge medallions in ivory and rose, linked by smaller pendant lozenges down the centre line. The ground is a warm ivory, worked in rose, wine, moss, teal and gold; a grey-green main border of palmettes and rosettes frames it, closed by fine red and ivory guard stripes. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The Mahi lattice is unforgiving at this scale — each rhombus is barely an inch across and holds five separate elements — so the knot count has to be high enough for the sickle leaves to keep their curve rather than blur into the rosette beside them. At 76×369cm this is a long runner, nearly four metres, suited to a corridor or a landing. The palette is soft and light rather than deep, so it will lift a dark hallway, though a pale ground shows traffic more readily than a red one.

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends, worked at a knot count fine enough to hold the Mahi lattice cleanly.

The pale ivory ground will show traffic and spills more readily than a dark rug would, and a runner takes concentrated wear down its centre line. A rug pad and regular rotation matter more here than on a rug that can be moved around a room.

Mahi means fish, and the fish are the four sickle-shaped leaves curving around each rosette — read them as swimming around a pond and the name makes sense. They are the element that distinguishes Mahi from a plain Herati lattice, and the first thing to lose when a rug is woven too coarsely, so their presence and crispness is a fair test of quality. The design is properly called Herati after Herat, where it was formalised, and it survives at any scale because it is a lattice rather than a picture: it tiles, so it can be cut to any size without looking truncated. That is also what makes it the natural choice for a runner. The one problem a runner creates is the medallion — a single central one would leave four metres of unrelieved field — and the classical answer, used here, is to repeat it down a pole with smaller pendant lozenges linking each to the next, so the eye is given something to travel between rather than one distant focus.
