A blue field centred on a red hooked medallion: a cream and gold diamond with a navy centre, framed by red hooked arms and pierced by a long pole that ends in an anchor-shaped finial at each end. Stepped triangles in cream, red and navy sit to either side of the medallion, and at both ends of the field stand rows of small flowering shrubs in red, gold, green and cream above a zigzag ground line, with a small diamond marking the centre of each end. A wide red border of alternating X-shaped stars and cream diamonds runs between narrow guard stripes, closed by a plain blue outer band and a short fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. A small single diamond sits on the centre line at each end of the field, exactly in line with the anchor finials, so the medallion's long axis is marked from one end of the field to the other. At 64×91cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or wall piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the thick pile of a Kazak is made for everyday floor use.

The red border and medallion hide everyday marks well. The blue field and plain blue outer band will show pile shading — lighter or darker depending on which way the pile is brushed — and blue fades from strong sunlight before red does.

Kazak weavers liked to mark the long axis of a rug, and this one does it three times over. Start with the medallion: a hooked diamond pierced by a pole, with an anchor-shaped finial at each end — one of the oldest Caucasian devices. Now follow the pole beyond the finials. At each end of the field, between the two rows of flowering shrubs, sits a small single diamond, placed exactly on the same line. And below it, the zigzag ground line that the shrubs stand on dips to a point at the centre. Medallion, finials, diamonds and zigzag all line up, so the eye is drawn straight down the middle of the rug from end to end. On a blue ground the red medallion stands out especially clearly, and the stepped cream triangles at its sides keep it from floating — they act like brackets holding it in place.
