Crimson and Taupe Rosette Medallion, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. At this size the rug is light enough to lift and shake out, which is the easiest way to keep it clean.

A crimson ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have. The taupe is the colour to watch — it is doing all the drawing and it is already a soft, low-contrast tone, so it has little room to grey before the medallions stop reading clearly against the field.

The colour doing the drawing here is not ivory, and that is the whole character of the rug. On a red-ground Bokhara the motifs are almost always carried in cream or ivory, which sits far above the ground in brightness and makes the emblems leap forward. This one uses a warm taupe instead. Measured, that taupe sits about eighty luminance points above the crimson; an ivory in the same place would sit about a hundred and fifty-six above — roughly twice the step.

Halving the contrast changes how the rug behaves in a room. The four rosette medallions do not jump out at you; they settle into the crimson and resolve as you look, which is why a rug this bright still reads as calm rather than loud. It is also why it looks older than it is — the mellowing that decades of light would give an ivory-drawn rug has been built in from the start. The small cream flowers at each medallion's centre are the exception, the one place true ivory appears, and they are what stop the design going flat.
