Espresso and Brick Red Turkmen Gül Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. At this size the rug is light enough to lift and shake out, which is the easiest way to keep it clean.

A near-black ground is the most forgiving colour a rug can have and hides everyday marks well. The exception is lint and pale fibres, which show on dark wool more than on any other, and the cream in the güls and the end panels, which is the first thing to grey. On a mat this small the wear concentrates rather than spreading, so move it or turn it more often than you would a larger rug.

Pick any one of the ten güls and follow the red inside it. It runs unbroken from one edge of the octagon to the other. That is not how a Turkmen gül is usually drawn. The classic form — the one on most Bokharas — is quartered: a cross divides the octagon into four, and the quarters alternate in colour diagonally, so two opposite quadrants sit dark and the other two light. The convention is fixed enough that the quartering is often the first thing used to recognise the weave at all.

These are undivided. The internal drawing is still symmetrical and still built from the same hooked devices, but it sits on one continuous field of red instead of being split across four. The effect is that each gül reads as a solid medallion rather than an assembled emblem, and it holds up much better against a ground this dark than a quartered gül would: a quartered gül carries two dark quadrants, and on a near-black field those would have half-dissolved into it. Here the whole area of every gül stays working against the black, which is why ten of them are enough to fill a rug this size without it looking sparse.
