Gold and Peach Turkmen Gül Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. At this size the rug is light enough to lift and shake out, which is the easiest way to keep it clean.

A gold ground sits at the paler, warmer end of the range and is less forgiving than a red or dark rug — footmarks and vacuum tracks show more readily across the open areas between the güls. The cream inside the güls and border stars is the first colour to grey.

Try to find the edge of a gül. On most Bokharas it is the first thing you see — a dark contour drawn right round the octagon, separating the emblem from the ground. On this rug there is no such line. Each gül is assembled from horizontal rows of small stepped devices in salmon, cream and teal, stacked one above another, and the octagonal silhouette appears simply because each row is a little shorter or longer than the one below it. The shape is made by where the rows stop.

It is a more demanding way to build an emblem. A drawn outline fixes the shape first and lets the filling be approximate; here the silhouette exists only as the sum of a dozen row-ends, so every row has to be counted correctly or the octagon goes crooked. Look down the column and check how consistently the weaver has held it. It also changes how the rug reads: with no contour to separate them, the güls sit lower against the gold ground than outlined ones would, and the whole field is quieter for it.
