A navy field carrying twelve Turkmen güls in two columns, each a lobed octagon outlined in black and divided into quarters of gold and ivory around a small black and olive diamond at its centre. Cross-shaped minor güls in ivory, gold and blue stand between them down the centre and along both edges of the field. Multi-band borders of small gold and olive flower heads and diamond diaper run on all four sides, with a wide plain navy band at each end and ivory fringe.

Hand-knotted in wool. Every gül is quartered in two colours, gold and ivory, with matching colours set diagonally opposite each other across the centre. At 77×128cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan, with ivory fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the close pile of a Bokhara is made for everyday floor use.

Navy wool hides everyday marks well but shows lint, dust and pale fibres at once, and the wide plain navy bands at both ends will show vacuum tracks. The gold and ivory in the güls are the lightest parts of the rug and the ones to watch for spills.

Look inside any one of the twelve güls and you will see it is divided into four quarters by the lines running through its centre. Two quarters are gold and two are ivory, and they are never side by side: each gold quarter faces the other gold quarter diagonally across the middle, and the same with the ivory. This counterchange of colour is one of the oldest conventions of Turkmen weaving. It gives each gül a quiet rotation, like a wheel, so that the octagon reads as a single balanced emblem rather than a shape filled in at random. On a navy ground the effect is especially clear, because gold and ivory are the two lightest colours on the rug. Step back and the twelve güls read as twelve small lamps, each lit on two opposite sides.
