Rows of large floral güls — the octagonal elephant's-foot emblems of the Turkmen tribes — march across a deep madder-red field, each one quartered by a dark cross and filled with an eight-petalled flower in gold, ivory and indigo. Smaller stepped diamonds sit between them, and a banded elem skirt of diamond lattice closes each end, exactly as on the old Afghan tribal weavings.

The field is framed by a red border of stylised leaf-and-flower motifs with ivory and indigo guard stripes, finishing in kilim ends and fringe. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan by Ersari Turkmen weavers, it is densely woven from hand-spun wool with a firm, hard-wearing pile and natural dyes that give the madder its glowing depth.

The repeating gül is one of the oldest living designs in rug-weaving, each tribe keeping its own version like a coat of arms. Densely knotted and built to last for generations, this is a warm, grounding piece for a living or dining room and a genuine collector's heirloom. As a hand-made rug, it is one of a kind.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
  • Use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
  • Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.

The gül — the word means both flower and, in some readings, clan — is the heraldic medallion of the Turkmen tribes of Central Asia, and the Ersari, the largest Turkmen group in northern Afghanistan, are famous for their generous, floral versions. Repeated in neat rows across a madder field, the güls turn the whole rug into a kind of tribal banner, while the elem panels at each end once marked the top and bottom of the weaving. Made in Afghanistan by hand from naturally dyed, hand-spun wool, the rug carries the small irregularities and gentle colour shifts of a piece worked entirely by hand at the loom rather than by machine.
