Wine Red Bashiri Rug, Hand-Knotted Wool

100% hand-spun Afghan wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan and finished with a grey fringe at both ends rather than the more usual ivory.

A dark indigo ground under dense red drawing is among the most forgiving surfaces a rug can have, and it hides everyday marks well. The ivory outlining each gül is the vulnerable colour and matters more than its small share suggests — it is the line that separates one emblem from the next, and if it greys the field closes up into a single dark mass. The grey fringe will show soiling sooner than the pile does.

Look at the gaps rather than the emblems. The indigo channels running between the güls measure 5.1cm where they separate one column from the next and 5.2cm where they separate one row from the next — the same width in both directions, within a few millimetres, across a rug three metres long. The güls those channels frame are not square at all. Each one is about 24.4cm wide against 21.6cm tall, roughly a tenth wider than it is high, so what reads at a glance as a circle is in fact a slightly flattened oval.

That combination is a deliberate piece of drawing. A weaver working a grid has to decide where any discrepancy between the horizontal and vertical rhythm of the knots is going to land, and here it has been pushed entirely into the emblem and kept out of the spacing. The result is a field that feels evenly ruled even though nothing in it is a true circle — the eye takes its sense of order from the gaps, which are regular, and forgives the emblems, which are not. Magnify one gül and the same instinct shows up again at smaller scale: a scalloped ring of rounded lobes, about as close to a curve as a knot grid allows, closing on a stepped square core with strictly orthogonal sides. One emblem, holding the hardest shape to weave and the easiest, one inside the other.
