A large cream shield-shaped medallion fills most of a sky-blue field, its outline lined with small tombstone-shaped panels, each holding a stylised tree or comb in red, green or navy. Inside the shield sits a red cross-shaped medallion with stepped arms, outlined in green, with a small blue and ivory panel at its centre and navy arrowhead bars above and below. Branching flower-trees and small tan animal figures stand in the corners of the blue field. A wide red border of alternating ivory snowflake-stars and navy hooked diamonds runs between blue and ivory guard stripes, with a short fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The small panels lining the shield alternate between red and green grounds all the way round, so the edge of the medallion reads like a crenellated wall. At 79×117cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the thick pile of a Kazak is made for everyday floor use.

The wide red border hides everyday marks well. The cream shield at the centre is the lightest large area and will show marks and pile shading first, and the sky-blue corners will show fading from strong sunlight before the red.

The great cream shape at the centre of this rug belongs to one of the most recognisable Caucasian designs, the shield Kazak — named for the large medallion that fills the field like a warrior's shield. What gives it away is the edge. Instead of a smooth outline, the shield is lined all round with small tombstone-shaped panels, each one holding a stylised tree or comb, so its outline looks crenellated like a fortified wall. Follow the panels round and you will see the weaver alternating their colours, red then green then red, which keeps the edge lively rather than heavy. Inside the shield, a red cross-shaped medallion with stepped arms gives the centre its focus, and out in the blue corners, small animal figures and branching trees add the touches of village life that make Kazaks so characterful.
