Ruby Red Turkmen Gül Khal Mohammadi Rug, Hand-Knotted Wool

100% hand-spun Afghan wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan with an ivory fringe and a woven elem panel at each end.

About as practical a rug as this catalogue holds. Under half a per cent of the surface is pale enough to count as neutral, so there is almost nothing to mark, and the borders are woven deeper still than the field. The pale rose inside the güls is the one vulnerable colour, and it is also the one doing the most work — it carries the internal drawing of every emblem. The ivory fringe will show soiling long before any of the pile does.

Dark wool usually means dull wool. As a dye is pushed deeper the colour tends to lose its intensity and drift toward brown or black, which is why the darkest parts of most red rugs read as shadow rather than as red. Measure this one band by band and it does not do that. Sort every coloured pixel by lightness and take the saturation of each band: from the darkest wool up through the mid tones, saturation sits between 0.74 and 0.79 on a nought-to-one scale and barely moves. That range covers about 89% of the rug.

So the rug gets darker without getting duller. The ground measures 0.80 saturation at a mid lightness; the near-black outlines that draw the güls measure 0.80 as well, at roughly half the lightness. They are the same intensity of colour, one simply deeper than the other. Only one wool breaks the pattern — the pale rose inside the güls, which drops to 0.33 and is the single genuinely soft note on the surface. That is what gives the piece its particular quality of looking lit from within rather than merely dark: the shadows in the drawing are not grey, they are red all the way down.
