Wine Red Turkmen Gül Khal Mohammadi Rug, Hand-Knotted Wool

100% hand-spun Afghan wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan with a cream fringe at both ends.

A wine red ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have, and with the field three-quarters covered in drawing there is very little open surface for a mark to show against — this is among the more practical rugs for a busy room. The pale cream inside the güls is the colour that will grey first.

The güls on this rug are packed about as tightly as the design allows. Measured across the field, roughly three-quarters of the surface carries drawing and only a quarter is open red, and that quarter survives as narrow channels running between emblems rather than as anything you would call ground. Each gül is round rather than octagonal, quartered by a cross, and filled with pale curled hooks; small dark crosses sit at every junction where four of them meet.

What is remarkable is how evenly they are spaced. Run a correlation along a line across the field and the pattern matches itself at better than seventy per cent when shifted by one gül — a very high figure, meaning the spacing barely drifts from one emblem to the next. On a loom that is genuinely difficult. Knots are tied by hand and the weft is beaten down by hand, so any inconsistency in tension accumulates as the work grows, and a rug approaching three metres long gives that drift a great deal of room to show. Here it does not. The regularity is what makes a field this dense read as ordered rather than busy.
