A deep green field sets off three cream-and-gold star medallions down the centre, surrounded by crosses, hooked ‘key’ motifs and star-flowers in gold, red and navy, in this hand-knotted Afghani Sherwan. A cream border of eight-petalled rosettes, flanked by navy guard stripes, frames the field — the rich green ground making a striking change from the usual reds.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from fine, hand-spun highland wool, the pile is dense and finely knotted, giving sharp definition to every motif and border. Coloured with natural dyes and worked entirely by hand, the tones glow with gentle abrash and every figure is drawn a little differently — the honest mark of a genuine one-of-a-kind, hand-made piece.
