A deep indigo field is covered edge to edge with an all-over lattice of small flowers, botehs and eight-pointed stars in red, gold and cream — the ‘afshan’ pattern of the eastern Caucasus — in this hand-knotted Afghani Sherwan. A red border of palmettes and small animal figures, flanked by cream guard stripes of triangles, frames the richly worked ground. It has the deep, jewel-like colour of a classic Shirvan–Baku weave.
Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from fine, hand-spun highland wool, the pile is dense and finely knotted, giving sharp definition to every motif and border. Coloured with natural dyes and worked entirely by hand, the tones glow with gentle abrash and every figure is drawn a little differently — the honest mark of a genuine one-of-a-kind, hand-made piece.
