A deep indigo field anchors this hand-knotted rug, centred on a bold madder-red lozenge medallion with an ivory heart — the single-medallion layout of the Afshar tribal weavers of south Persia. Around it the navy ground is scattered with flowering plants, botehs, little animals and geometric charms, while red corner spandrels with yellow octagonal güls and a reciprocal zigzag edge frame the centre. The contrast of the deep blue ground against the glowing red medallion gives the rug its presence.

It is hand-knotted in Afghanistan by master weavers working in the older Caucasian and Persian tribal traditions, with a fine, even knot count, a low clipped pile and flat-woven kilim ends. The wool is hand-spun and coloured with natural dyes, which give the indigo and madder their depth and the gentle, light-catching variation that machine-made rugs can never reproduce. A broad ivory border of serrated running-dog motifs, framed by guard stripes, gathers the whole piece together.

Densely woven and built to last for generations, this is a collector-grade piece — equally at home as the centrepiece of a formal living or dining room or as an heirloom investment. As a hand-made rug, it is genuinely one of a kind.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
  • Use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
  • Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.

This rug follows the single-medallion layout of the Afshar, a tribal people of south-eastern Persia known for bold geometric centres on deep grounds. A madder-red lozenge medallion with an ivory heart sits at the centre of a deep indigo field scattered with flowering plants, botehs and small animals, while red corner spandrels with yellow octagonal güls and a reciprocal zigzag edge frame the design. Knotted entirely by hand in Afghanistan from hand-spun wool and natural dyes, the motifs are drawn freehand and the colours shift softly across the field — the fingerprint of a single weaver at the loom rather than a machine.
