A column of large serrated star medallions rises up a deep indigo field in madder red, ivory and blue, surrounded by a teeming ground of small botehs, eight-pointed stars and rosettes — and, along the lower field, the stylised peacocks that are the signature of the Akstafa weavings of the eastern Caucasus. Almost no space is left unworked.
A glowing red main border carries a procession of botehs and serrated leaves, framed by ivory guard stripes of running stars, finishing in a striped kilim end and fringe. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan in the Caucasian Shirvan manner, it is finely and densely woven from hand-spun wool, its natural dyes giving the indigo, madder and gold a deep, settled richness.
Akstafa rugs are among the most sought-after of all Caucasian designs, prized for their bold medallions and their charming birds. Densely knotted and built to last for generations, this is a striking, story-filled centrepiece for a living or dining room and a genuine collector's heirloom. As a hand-made rug, it is one of a kind.

Care instructions
- Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
- Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
- Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
- Use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
- Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.
Akstafa takes its name from a town in the Shirvan area of the eastern Caucasus, and its rugs are instantly known by two things: tall, many-rayed star medallions stacked up the field, and rows of long-tailed peacocks worked into the design. The dense field of small botehs and stars around them shows the patience of a fine weaver, who carried the whole composition in memory. Made in Afghanistan by hand from naturally dyed, hand-spun wool, the rug keeps the gentle colour shifts and small irregularities that prove it was knotted by a single weaver at the loom rather than turned out by a machine.
