Three madder-red medallions rise in a column up the centre of this rug, each a stepped hexagon filled with stars and hooked motifs, set against a deep indigo field that teems with the small talismanic figures of nomadic weaving — birds and animals, rosettes, combs, stars and scattered geometric charms. Nothing is left plain; the crowded field is a private language of good-luck symbols.
A madder-red inner border of stylised flowering trees frames the field, wrapped in turn by ivory serrated-leaf and barber-pole guard stripes and a camel-toned outer band. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan in the Qashqai tribal manner, it is woven from hand-spun wool with a firm pile and natural dyes whose indigo and madder carry real depth and subtle variation.
Tribal pole-medallion rugs are among the most characterful of all hand-weavings, every one improvised by its maker. Densely knotted and built to last for generations, this is a warm, story-filled centrepiece for a living or dining room and a true collector's heirloom. As a hand-made rug, it is one of a kind.

Care instructions
- Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
- Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
- Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
- Use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
- Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.
Among the Qashqai and Khamseh confederations of southern Persia, a rug was woven from memory and imagination rather than a drawn cartoon, and this design shows it. Three linked medallions march up a central pole — a layout thought to descend from far older garden and tree-of-life designs — while the indigo field around them fills with a menagerie of tiny birds, animals and protective charms, each weaver adding her own. The borders run with stylised flowering trees and serrated leaves. Woven in Afghanistan by hand from naturally dyed, hand-spun wool, its slightly irregular drawing and gentle colour shifts are the fingerprint of a single maker at the loom rather than a machine.
