A deep indigo field carries this hand-knotted rug in the old Shirvan manner — a dense, all-over tribal design from the Shemakha country of the eastern Caucasus. Across the midnight-blue ground runs a restless scatter of stepped medallions, eight-pointed stars, flowering shrubs and a whole menagerie of small birds, roosters and four-legged animals, worked in madder red, saffron, ivory and soft blue. Every space is filled; the abundance and the animals are the design.

It is hand-knotted in Afghanistan by master weavers working in the older Caucasian Shirvan tradition, with a fine, even knot count, a low clipped pile and flat-woven kilim ends. The wool is hand-spun and coloured with natural dyes, which give the indigo and madder their depth and the gentle, light-catching variation that machine-made rugs can never reproduce. A broad madder-red border of bold palmettes and rosettes, framed by guard stripes of linked diamonds, gathers the whole piece together.

Densely woven and built to last for generations, this is a collector-grade piece — equally at home as the centrepiece of a formal living or dining room or as an heirloom investment. As a hand-made rug, it is genuinely one of a kind.

Material: 100 percent hand-spun Afghan wool coloured with natural dyes, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen, and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
  • Use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
  • Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.

This rug reproduces the dense, animated weaving of Shemakha, the old capital of the Shirvan khanate in the eastern Caucasus. Rather than a single medallion, the indigo field is filled edge to edge with stepped polygons, eight-pointed stars, flowering shrubs and a lively scatter of birds, roosters and small animals — the tribal world of the weavers recorded knot by knot. The deep blue ground is the classic Shirvan indigo, set against madder red, saffron and ivory drawn from natural dyes. Knotted by hand in Afghanistan from hand-spun wool, every motif is drawn a little differently and the colours shift softly across the field — the signature of a single weaver at the loom rather than a machine.
