A layered diamond medallion in madder red and ivory floats at the centre of a deep indigo field, anchored by bold red corner spandrels that each carry a golden octagonal rosette. Between them the navy ground is alive with the small motifs of southern Persian tribal weaving — rows of little flowering plants, stars, birds and scattered charms drawn freehand from memory.

An ivory main border of linked wineglass-and-leaf motifs frames the field, flanked by barber-pole and S-motif guard stripes, and the rug finishes in kilim ends and fringe. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan in the Shiraz tribal manner, it is woven from hand-spun wool with a firm pile and natural dyes that give the indigo and madder real depth.

The single-medallion tribal rug is the warm, characterful heart of Persian village weaving — formal enough to centre a room, relaxed enough to live with. Densely knotted and built to last for generations, it makes a handsome centrepiece for a living or dining room and a true collector's heirloom. As a hand-made rug, it is one of a kind.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
  • Use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
  • Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.

The rugs of the Qashqai and the wider Fars region — sold for generations through the bazaar of Shiraz, which gave them their market name — are among the most beloved of all Persian tribal weavings. A single bold medallion sits on a field deliberately filled with tiny flowering plants, birds and good-luck charms, each weaver improvising the details so no two rugs are alike. The red corner spandrels and ivory border are hallmarks of the type. Made in Afghanistan by hand from naturally dyed, hand-spun wool, the rug carries the gentle colour shifts and small asymmetries that mark a piece woven entirely by a single pair of hands rather than a machine.
