Three great eight-pointed stars stride up a deep madder-red field, each built from interlocking navy and red rays around a green-and-ivory octagonal heart. This is the Lesghi star, one of the boldest motifs of the Caucasus, named for the Lezgi people of the eastern mountains and instantly recognised by collectors.

Around the stars the red ground is scattered with small tribal charms — birds, animals and geometric figures in ivory, gold and green — while the field is framed by an indigo border of hooked diamonds and ivory guard stripes of running stars. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan in the Caucasian manner, it is woven from hand-spun wool with a firm pile and natural dyes that give the madder and indigo real depth.

Bold-scaled star rugs like this carry a room on their own, graphic and warm at once. Densely knotted and built to last for generations, this medium piece makes a striking centrepiece for a living or dining room and a true collector's heirloom. As a hand-made rug, it is one of a kind.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
  • Use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
  • Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.

The Lesghi star takes its name from the Lezgi people of the eastern Caucasus, in present-day Dagestan, where this striking eight-pointed motif was woven for generations. Each star is built from two interlocked stepped crosses around a central octagon, and rugs were usually composed of two, three or more stars stacked up the field. The bold geometry suited the highland wool and the weaver's eye, worked from memory rather than a drawn plan. Made in Afghanistan by hand from naturally dyed, hand-spun wool, the rug carries the subtle colour shifts and small irregularities that prove a single weaver sat at the loom, not a machine.
